Explore the essential fundamentals of working with hand tools while creating a beautiful 3-leg stool with a free-form seat. The stool, echoing the fluid style of Wharton Esherick’s famous design, is a satisfying project that covers several fundamental handtool techniques that will be discussed in detail. The splayed legs and hand-shaped seat create a light, strong, and comfortable stool.

Learn the essential processes of building a post & rung chair while learning how to instruct a chair class. Utilizing machines and hand tools, we’ll use the 2-Slat Post & Rung Side Chair to teach future teachers.

This class is being held for folks who identify as trans or non-binary, who have a curiosity on how to transform wood using hand carving and shaping techniques. There will be an emphasis on design and expression. Experiment with color, texture, and form as you develop your own personal style. Discuss how to apply your skills to furniture, functional objects, and wood sculpture. To encourage your ongoing practice, dive into tool care, and sharpening, and learn how to create a viable hand-tool workspace at home. Projects and discussions will be geared toward all levels of experience.

People Collection Stools With Rob Spiece & Katie Bister At The Woodworking School at Pine Croft

The People Collection Stools are crafted in Berea College’s Student Craft wood shop by students and staff. The stool-making process is optimized for efficiency using jigs and fixtures, with around 30 made per run—not factory-level, but cost-effective. The program emphasizes process development in woodworking, encouraging exploration of different techniques. Over three days, each student will build two stools using common home shop tools like routers, table saws, and lathes, gaining insights to adapt these methods to their own shops.

Handwoven Chair Seats With Rebecca Juliette-Duex & Hannah Watson At John C. Campbell Folk School

Using traditional Shaker tape and repurposed chairs, create uniquely handwoven seats based on patterns such as houndstooth, canvas weave, and twill. This class is a deep exploration of woven patterns, starting with several weavings in paper, then translating those patterns into handwoven seats. Leave the week with a new understanding of weave structure and a selection of beautiful, functional chairs for your home.

Comb-Back Stick Chair with Chris Schwarz at Lost Art Press

Build a comb-back stick chair – one of the most popular forms. The construction process is a combination of heavy hand-tool use with some assistance from the bandsaw. The emphasis of this class is on building beautiful chairs with few tools – and even fewer jigs.

People Collection Rocker With Rob Spiece & Katie Bister At The Woodworking School at Pine Croft

This week-long class offers an inside look at the production process behind the Student Craft Rocking Chair. Students will explore how jigs and repeatable methods help streamline the making of this complex 20-part chair. The course covers key phases including seat shaping, undercarriage assembly, and back construction, with a focus on maintaining consistency across builds. While production tools are used, traditional techniques are also discussed. Each student will take part in shaping and assembling major components, gaining hands-on experience in chairmaking from start to finish.

Dutch Tool Chest with Megan Fitzpatrick at Lost Art Press

Build a handsome tool chest as a great three-day introduction to several bedrock hand-tool joinery techniques: dovetails, dados, and rabbets. Plus, learn how to cut a fingernail molding, raise a pane, and use cut nails as you explore rules for carcass construction. By the end of Day 3, you'll be able to pop all your tools in your new chest (which fits in the back of almost any car) for your drive home.

Balloon Back or Fan Back Side Chair with Luke Barnett at Sam Beauford

Build a Windsor Balloon Back or Fan Back Side Chair with Chairmaker Luke A. Barnett. Students will join us for a 5-day class. Students can choose to build either a balloon back or a fan back side chair. You will learn both techniques in class. We will start with logs on Monday morning and finish with a balloon back OR fan back side chair on Friday.
Who should apply: All applicants must identify as historically excluded or under-represented in the field of woodworking. Additionally, we encourage individuals who would not normally have an opportunity like this to apply.

From Tool to Stool With Rusty Tchernis at John C. Campbell Folk School

Combine your interest in tool making with an introduction to Windsor chair making. Learn the process of making a traditional wooden spokeshave, a versatile tool that is integral to building chairs and other hand-carved wooden objects. Then, use your spokeshave to build a three-legged stool with a carved seat. This fast-paced class is ideal for students who want to build strong hand tool woodworking skills.
