Original Chair Design With George Sawyer

4 Full Scholarships (covers Tuition and Materials).

This one-week, green woodworking skills based intensive will provide a safe supportive and creative space for chairmakers to explore the realities of bringing a new greenwood chair concept to life. Students will spend time prior to the class preparing sketches, models, and or prototypes and will be given feedback by George. The one week class will then be spent working with traditional windsor chair tools, techniques, and parameters to figure out how to build the designs that students developed. Our goal is for students to leave the class feeling well prepared to take their design to completion.

Who should apply: All applicants should have some experience with chairmaking, independent design and comfortability trying and learning new woodworking techniques. Applicants should identify as historically excluded or underrepresented in the field of woodworking.

The People Collection Stools are crafted in Berea College’s Student Craft wood shop by students and staff. The stool-making process is optimized for efficiency using jigs and fixtures, with around 30 made per run—not factory-level, but cost-effective. The program emphasizes process development in woodworking, encouraging exploration of different techniques. Over three days, each student will build two stools using common home shop tools like routers, table saws, and lathes, gaining insights to adapt these methods to their own shops.

Who should apply: Applicants of all skill levels are welcome and must identify as historically excluded or under-represented in the field of woodworking.
