My name is Caleb James and I make hand tools, furniture and teach woodworking.

In recent years I’ve spend most days making tools in the 18 & 19 century style with a special interest and focus on Windsor chairmaker's tools. My spokeshave has become the most produced tool in my line of offerings.

I currently teach chairmaking in the Danish Modern style and spend the remainder of my time working on my first book for Lost Art Press on Danish Modern Chairmaking. Thats my life in a nutshell.

  • Peter Galbert

A Note on Advising

The Chairmaker’s Toolbox would not have been possible without the support and energy of the tool advisors.

All of the toolmakers we contracted for this project are highly skilled and established in their fields – however, most hadn’t made or even used the chair making tool they were being asking to produce. The tool advisors zoomed with the makers as many times as needed throughout the process to talk through the use, specialized dimensions, and preferred materials for each tool. Many advisors and makers traded prototypes until each tool reached a level of exceptional finish and functionality.
